What is Back on my Feet?
Founded in Philadelphia in 2007, with chapters in DC, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Indianapolis and Atlanta, Back on My Feet is the nonprofit organization that uses running to engage individuals experiencing homelessness and move them toward self-sufficiency. Back on My Feet brings volunteers from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds together with resident members to run three times per week, as a means to build confidence and self-esteem, improve physical fitness and health, and reduce the power of negative influences in their lives. BoMF uses running as a vehicle to show individuals that they are capable of accomplishing anything with hard work, dedication, and perseverance. The organization does not provide food or shelter; rather, it partners with social service providers and provides a community that embraces equality, respect, discipline, teamwork, and leadership. The organization’s Next Steps program, available to those who have demonstrated a commitment to the program, includesconnections to educational opportunities, workforce development sessions, job training programs, employment and housing placement assistance, as well as financial aid.
Back on My Feet has received incredible media support, including attention from NBC Nightly News, ABC World News,CNN, The Today Show, and most recently the Wall Street Journal for its ingenuity in tackling this difficult social issue.
